After a long hot summer's day, there's nothing more rewarding than to kick back with a cold gin & tonic. However, there are many more exciting ways to jazz up your gin than the usual ice and a slice. Read on for the run down of our favourite botanical infusions for the summer.
JUNIPER BERRIES
Most gins are traditionally distilled with juniper berries, in fact the name "Gin" derives from the word juniper. Juniper berries are responsible for the peppery pine flavours in the gin, so if you are attempting to infuse your own gin at home, the addition of these berries will intensify these flavours giving your drink an extra hint of spice.
CARDAMOM PODS
Add the distinctively aromatic flavour of Cardamom Pods to your gin, we recommend the green pods for a more delicate flavour. The citrusy notes of the cardamom compliment the gin providing a deeper and richer alternative to merely adding a slice of lemon or orange. This infusion suits those who enjoy their drinks with powerful flavour.
PINK PEPPERCORNS
If the punchiness of cardamom pods proves too much, the addition of pink peppercorns to your gin will guarantee a more subtle aromatic flavour. Whether you infuse this gin at home or buy a gin distilled with these peppercorns, it is tempting to garnish your drink with the attractive pink kernels. However, we recommend you don't over-garnish as you will spend most of your time picking them out of the drink instead of enjoying it's sweet yet spicy flavour. If you want to get even more experimental, coriander seeds perfectly compliment the piquant pink peppercorns. Why not try infusing your gin with both?
CORIANDER SEEDS
Similarly to juniper berries, coriander seeds are wildly popular to infuse with gin. They provide nutty and earthy base notes whilst delivering a subtle citrus flavour. Fresh coriander leaves can also be used to great effect as a garnish for those who really enjoy the naturally warm flavours of this spice.
ALTERNATIVE G&T GARNISHES
Once you've successfully infused your gin with one of our recommendations, why don't you try an alternative garnish to liven it up even more? Pink grapefruit is a delightful citrus option for those who are bored with lemons and limes. It is fabulously fruity and provides a unique sharpness that compliments the spiciness of many gin varieties.
For a more aromatic option, fresh ginger and star anise can transform the classic gin flavours we have all grown accustomed to. You can use thin slices of fresh ginger, no need to grate or crush. Coupled with the star anise, this garnish provides a warming and aromatic alternative to the fruity gin favourites of the summer. Lastly, we recommend strawberries and black pepper as the ultimate summer garnish. The fresh strawberries provide a beautiful sweetness that contrasts with the twist of aromatic black pepper. An attractive and tasty garnish, the best part is eating the gin soaked strawberries at the end!
However you choose to enjoy your cocktails this summer, remember to have fun and drink responsibly ;-)
